Supercap Batteries

Super capacitors or supercap batteries are the next great technology in energy storage. A capacitor stores electrical energy without chemical change. Hence there is no in-built deterioration like in all chemical batteries.

The typical life span of a lead acid battery is 3-5 years in a solar system and you are well advised to use only 50% of it’s capacity in order to get a better life span.

Lithium batteries have a much improved cycle life and are presently the most popular choice in the solar industry. However, the mining of Lithium is not exactly environmentally friendly and even though much better than lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries deteriorate over time. You know this from older laptops or cellphones which just do not hold the charge like they used to when they were new. The typical life span of a high quality lithium battery is approximately 10 years.

Supercap technology
Supercap technology is opening a whole new ball game

Based on ultra-thin graphene film, the new supercaps are easily beating lithium batteries in every aspect:

  • fast charge and sustained high discharge without overheating, thus making them inherently safe.
  • discharge 100% without damage (recommended to limit to 95%, a lithium battery should not be discharged beyond 85%, for longer life  preferrably 70-80%) Therefore a 5.5 KWh unit gives you 5.25 KWh useable energy, not 4.5 or 4 like a lithium battery.
  • Easy communication with inverter and perfect synchronisation of up to 10 sets in parallel.
  • Ultra low maintenance
  • Design life 40-50 years (20,000 cycles) as opposed to 3500 – 6000 cycles for most Lithium batteries)

We are working with the tried and tested Green Tech batteries, approved by TUV Germany.
